O.F.F. to School Field Day
Approximately 200 children from the Thomas J. Pappas Middle School for the homeless received a chance to “shop ‘til they dropped” for school supplies on September 18th at The Wal-Mart Super Center, located at 3721 E. Thomas in Phoenix. The Ortiz Family Foundation donated $30,000 to the students at the Thomas J Pappas School for this day of shopping. Middle school students received $150 each to purchase the necessary back to school supplies and clothing.
Places like the Thomas J. Pappas Schools for the Homeless are doing something that is pretty amazing. We will do everything we can to help them out. These schools are about changing lives, and we should all strive to make that kind of impact. Everyone in this world deserves the opportunity to better their surroundings with a solid education.~ Russ Ortiz

2007 Roberto Clemente Award
Russ Ortiz was the San Francisco Giants Nominee for the 2007 Roberto Clemente Award. The Roberto Clemente Award acknowledges the player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship and community involvement. As part of being nominated, Chevrolet donated $7,500 to the charity of choice for the nominee. Russ selected The Arc of San Francisco to be the recipient of this $7,500 donation. “We’re very grateful to Russ and the Ortiz Family Foundation,” said Tim Hornbecker of The Arc. Tim also notes, “the funds will go toward making much needed improvements in our art studio.”
The Roberto Clemente Award is given to the nominee with the most votes and will be announced during the World Series. “As a player, people look up to you, and when you do stuff off the field, it sets a big example,” Ortiz said. “I think every ballplayer needs to be involved in the community, somehow, some way, whether it’s your first day or you’ve been playing for 15 years.”
